Cause And Effect Of Procrastination
Most people don’t realize that continuously putting off critical duties will not only have negative consequences on the result of the task that needs to be done but on their mental health and physical health as well. Procrastination is a propensity to postpone what is essential to reach a goal. We’ve all had a paper due on a Monday that we had known about for the past three weeks, but we choose to save it for a Sunday evening, which turns into a Monday morning. As humans anxiously work to finish an assignment we probably could have finished in class over a couple of days. People may have been preoccupied those couple of weeks, with a job, sports or maybe even another curriculum activity. Also, maybe people haven’t been busy at all, and have chosen to go home after class and continuously tell themselves “I’ll get it done tomorrow.” Whether it’s homework, paying a bill, or even making a simple phone call.
People may have excuses for leaving things to the last minute, but the hard truth that they need to accept is that they are habitual procrastinator. About one-third admitted that the quality of their papers/projects usually or always suffered, and one-fourth said the same about their exams. Some people usually or always turned assignments in late as a result of procrastination. Students are steading finding themselves prioritizing their time with smartphones, tablets, laptops, and TV. Instead of directing their attention to current assignments, projects, and tests, they are focusing more on the latest apps or devices. These lists of disturbances are taking student’s time and attention away from their schoolwork along with other responsibilities and obligations.
While attending college whether it could be full time or half time some students find it hard to alter work, family, and friends. Typically, college students are the worst hit by procrastination because they have many different activities to focus on instead of studying. Procrastinators tend to find themselves with lower stress and less illness than non-procrastinators, but that late in the term, procrastinators reported higher stress and more illness. Procrastination is characterized by which can turn into unbeneficial consequences for individual well-being and performance.
Procrastination only brings more damage than good. It is difficult to be prevented as it is caused by an individual’s personality. Personality is shaped during the adolescent stage and is almost impossible to change upon entering adulthood. To prevent the habit of procrastination, parents and educators play the role of shaping an individual’s personality. Procrastination is also caused by an individual’s mental state. The individual must be matured enough to control his or her emotions and not let them interfere with their daily work and task in order to prevent falling into procrastination. As for the effects, it brings both positive and negative effects.
In conclusion, a student or anyone with that matter can overcome procrastination by becoming aware of its causes and effects and develop their time management skills. Having knowledge of the causes and effects of procrastination is more understanding to become more aware of. Gaining self-awareness will develop one to become sensitive to their wrongdoings. Time management is a great way to eliminate procrastination for future references. Although procrastination is a student’s worst competitor, it can still be conquered.
