Problem Statement

Let’s Start off by defining what family violence is, family violence, is a behavior pattern that is abusive by one family member towards another. Family violence can occur in various forms; the most well-known are domestic violence, child abuse, and elder abuse. Although there has been considerable study of the patterns, risk factors, and interventions for each form of family violence, a great controversy still exists within each area. There is also an increasing awareness of the value of greater integration of theory and research across areas into a family violence approach through Enviromental’s science. Current knowledge related to these problems suggests a response to this major health and social problem by taking steps to advance knowledge. Beginning with the importance of separating myths from facts about child abuse and neglect. Myth #1: It’s only abuse if it’s violent. (Urizar-Faught, C. 2016, July 13) Fact: Abuse is not limited to just physical abuse there are many other different types that can be considered abuse and can be just as damaging. Physical abuse is just one type of child abuse. Myth #2: Only bad people abuse their children. (Urizar-Faught, C. 2016, July 13) Fact: It’s easier to say that only “bad” people are only capable of abusing their children sadly that is not the case. Adults who are not mentally and physically stable can unintentionally abuse their children. Myth #3: Child abuse doesn’t happen in “good” families. (Urizar-Faught, C. 2016, July 13) Fact: Child abuse can occur in upper, middle, and lower class in all racial and cultural environments. Myth #4: Most child abusers are strangers. (Urizar-Faught, C. 2016, July 13) Fact: A lot of child abuse right from the ones that are supposed to nurture and love you which are family members or close relatives. Myth #5: Abused children always grow up to be abusers. (Urizar-Faught, C. 2016, July 13) Fact: While yes it can happen as cycle of violence can happen when a child is abused and don’t know better. There is another part where survivors tend to strongly pull away from that and instead gain a strong will to prevent the same experience happening to their own children.

So Once again physical abuse includes physical aggression directed at a child by an adult. Child sexual abuse is a form of child abuse in which an adult or older adolescent abuses a child for sexual stimulation. Emotional Abuse can take many forms and can inlcude any type of verbal abuse. Neglect is a form of abuse in which the person is unable to care for himself or herself and fails to meet the basic needs of children: housing, clothing, food, and access to medical care. This can turn into long term affects such as physical injuries, low self-esteem, attention disorders, violent behavior, and even death. While some emotional and behavioral problems that can affect a child who suffered sexual abuse to feel guilt and self-blame have flashbacks, nightmares, insomnia, and fear of things associated with the abuse. Develop a lack of trust and find it difficult to build a relationship. If you can’t trust your own parents, then who can you turn to trust? This can lead to difficulty maintaining relationships in adulthood. It can also lead to unhealthy relationships because the adult doesn’t know what a good relationship is. As they grow up, abused kids may neglect their education or settle for low-paying jobs because they don’t believe they are worth more. Abused children cannot express emotions safely. As a result, the emotions get stuffed down, coming out in unexpected ways. As adult they can struggle with unexplained anxiety, depression, or anger and may turn to unhealthy ways to cope. With this said all types of abuse and neglect leave lasting scars which lead to cause either physical or psychological harm. They can either be visible to non-visible to the human’s eyes, but they can hold a long-lasting effect throughout their life. Interfere with their one’s self, their future relationships, and ability to function at home, work, and school. As well as society as the ideal vison of a family is broken and weakens the structures of it, but also contribute to issues that are social and community for example homelessness.

Literature Review/ Discussion

“The violence that occurs among family members presents a paradox in that harm is purposely inflicted by those who are supposed to care for or depend on one another” (Jouriles et al. 2001). Family is an important agent of socialization so when it comes to family relationships it is essential to gain a better understanding and addressing the problem. Article Linking Childhood and Adult Criminality voices out that “Through social learning processes, children learn behaviors both from experiencing the ways in which others treat them, as well as observing how their own parents treat each other” (Bandura A, 1977). I would like to agree with this statement and express that this can be considered the cycle of violence. In addition, children are like sponges who absorb everything around them effortlessly, continuously, and indiscriminately. Later in life they will not be able distinguish the inappropriate and acceptable manner in response to a solving a problem and will respond to violence to distress. “This sets in motion a vicious cycle where children of abusers become abusers themselves.” (Peace, Colleen)

Moving forward Article, The Domino Effects of Domestic Violence in Society pinpoints throughout the article the effects of domestic violence in society and takes off by with homelessness. It has become a serious problem around the globe as well as within the United States and it is having a bad effect on the federal reserve system which is the central bank of the United States and is known as the most powerful institutions in the world. By establishing help the government provides free services like counseling and shelters to the victims and children.

Secondly, domestic violence affects the business world by victims who fail to show up at work. In a National Benchmark Telephone Survey on Domestic Violence in the Workplace the research they have done presents that between 44%-64% who have personally been on the receiving end of abuse state that is does indeed also affect their workplace and also found it difficult to properly perform their job. In some cases, employers do not provide programs or support for victims or employees aren’t aware them because they weren’t properly addressed. So, Studies reveal about 33% declare that their employer provides no programs or support 66% were not aware of their employer having a workplace domestic violence policy. It is proven that domestic violence from research along with examination holds an impact among the economic. In connection with medical cost, failure to show up to work or ability to properly perform the job well, can result in lessening the chance of opportunities for educational, retirement, or employment. Since the cost are contributing more into healthcare, criminal activity, and labor productivity.

Theory

However, in spite of this these issues they are hardly ever at the core of the standard of sociology. Symbolic interactionalism depends on implying that individuals create and depend upon social association. You can identify and relate it to family abuse and neglect. Family is known as one of the major agents of socialization because family is a function that provides for society. It’s the foundation where you learn to mold your outlook toward society. Childhood is where socialization is acquired to build necessary skills to handle to able to manage their own lives, build great interpersonal relationships, and to become economically independent. If there is lack of nurture or education there will be a struggle to have the ability to properly perform as productive member of the society because the effects of it interferes with the performance the simplest tasks are also considered difficult. Your stuck with having to battle with the demons within yourself every day. Ideally one would like to think that a perfect family exists based on society standards and a dysfunctional family in looked down on. In reality what a family shows outside of their home to the public can be very different to what happens behind closed doors. The happiest family isn’t always the perfect family. Every family has their own flaws, struggles, and personal issues you can say that pretty much all families could be called dysfunctional.

Conclusion

I believe family abuse is an important issue and the effects it brings can interfere with the ability to function in a society. I agree with article Linking Childhood and Adult Criminality that states “Through social learning processes, children learn behaviors both from experiencing the ways in which others treat them, as well as observing how their own parents treat each other” (Bandura A, 1977). Secondly, the article The Domino Effects of Domestic Violence in Society, domestic violence affects the business world by victims who fail to show up at work or school. Personally, I can say that I grew up in a dysfunctional home where there was emotional abuse involved. It is quite hard to explain, but from my observation as a child growing up my perspective of my parent’s relationship was not typical to what I saw from other children’s parents. I soon realized it was because it was a toxic relationship. There was withdrawal of affection from my mother as I can sense tension, uncomfortableness, and anger from her. Opposite from my father who always tried to hug or kiss. My father was controlling, had unreasonable jealousy, did guilt trips, isolated my mother from her friends, but not family, constantly calling or messaging her when she is not with him. This behavior of my father soon transfers towards me too when I got into middle school. For years I witnessed there arguments, actions, and behaviors towards one another and it did affect in when they were married and even now when they are divorced. I have a strong relationship with my mother and not so great relationship with my father. The way this affected me was it gave me strong motivation to prevent any actions and behaviors similar to my father let it happen to me, but I also grew lack of trust, built a wall around myself, and a fear in starting a romantic relationship.

I also suffered sexual abuse as a child from a distant relative, but during my childhood it seems like I pushed the memory fall into my mind that I completely forgot about it and only surfaced when I got entered high school after taking health class. Although now I understand a lot of my actions and behaviors from childhood up until now make sense, I subconsciously was emotionally traumatized. It affected my ability to show affection towards my brothers when I got older. It also affected my relationship with my father. I grew up only taking to females and avoiding males. I stuffed my emotions down as a child which built anger. Both the emotional abuse at home and sexual abuse as a child growing up, I also developed psychological abuse. Which includes anxiety and serve depression, that interfered my ability to function at home, work, and school. My coping mechanisms were not healthy as it involved self-harm, suicidal thoughts, missing school, having to quit my job, and health issues. Now which I have gradually healing I gained a better understanding on the subject and learned how to better manage it. Even so I can also say I grew up in a loving home and never lacked basic necessities to survive. I had a roof over my head, food, clothes, and an opportunity at education. I am content and happy with how I turned out regardless of my flaws and issues. Abuse holds a long-lasting effect throughout life. Interferes with their one’s self, their future relationships, and ability to function at home, work, and school. A lot of it is influenced by our surroundings so I agree with the articles and how family violence affects both the individual and society as well.
