40% Macbeth
Macbeth, a noble five-star general with a brave overambitious mind, played a vital role in his mortal failure. Macbeth always wanted more and became hungry for the crown. This leads him to kill Duncan, Banquo, and Macduff’s kid and wife to be safe on the throne as shown in the significant quote “To be thus is nothing but to safely thus”. He doesn’t tell Lady Macbeth that he shall kill Banquo because he doesn’t need her opinion any longer. His over-ambition was on a mission to make sure he will take over the throne and not Banquo and Macduff’s children. His mindset adapts throughout the play and he will kill anyone who challenges him, leading to his downfall. “Is this a dagger I see before me” this soliloquy conveys how he is reluctant to commit the murder of King Duncan but proceeds? He hesitant towards the thought of killing the king because who would want to commit homicide to a great fortunate king? Would you? He was a heroic soldier neglected by his fatal flaws. ‘When the battle’s lost and won.’ We see that Macbeth will win many battles throughout the play, but for every victory, he will have a loss. We later see Macbeth win his battles, become king, killing King Duncan, Banquo, and Macduff’s family. Eventually pulling him further down. For every murder there is always a consequence, leading to him losing his wife and then his own life. Macbeth takes a significant role in his OWN downfall and now he feels nothing.
20% Witches
The witches are to a considerable extent responsible for Macbeth’s downfall. In the descriptive and effective paradox “fair is foul and foul is fair” The witches are saying that what is fair to man is foul to the witches, but what men may see as foul, the witches see as fair. This paradox refers to how things aren’t always what they seem. This adds to the mysteries and peculiar presence of the witches and how they carried evil, demonic tendencies. If Macbeth never encountered the witches in the first place then his vaulting ambition would have never been challenged to the edge and he would have most likely never killed king Duncan. the witches impacted his thoughts and opinions about what could happen in his life which he became obsessed with, leading up to his downfall.
40% Lady Macbeth
Lady Macbeth to a substantial extent responsible for Macbeth’s devastating downfall. Lady Macbeth is a ruthless heartless woman who will go to tremendous lengths to get what she wants. She has to convince Macbeth to commit the killing of Duncan because he will not do it for himself. She endlessly encourages Macbeth to follow his desires even when they’re wrongly directed. Her main piece of advice to Macbeth is conveyed in this world-renown simile ”Look like the innocent flower but a serpent underneath.” (find the meaning of it and say if you think Macbeth followed this advice thought out the rest of the play) She challenges his masculinity and manipulates Macbeth with insults and magnetic words to encourage him to kill Duncan. Lady Macbeth uses the adjective “COWARD” to describe Macbeth. However, Macbeth is no coward and is being fed this by Lady Macbeth, which makes him feel downy looked upon and intimidated. Lady Macbeth’s devious and deceitful words eventually convince Macbeth to commit regicide. Not being able to handle the guilt, Lady Macbeth’s death isolates and secludes Macbeth. He had no one to defend his favor. Lady Macbeth manipulated him which ultimately caused him to kill the king.
Conclusion
Overall Macbeth is equally as responsible for his downfall as lady Macbeth Don’t be like Macbeth, don’t let your words and needs overthrow your power of judgment.
