Teenage pregnancy is one of the major issues nowadays, as far as we know our population is gradually increasing every day. A lot of people, especially teenagers lack the knowledge of family planning and the important use of a condom for sexual intercourse. According to The Commission on Population and Development (POPCOM), “in the Philippines, approximately 30 to 50 pregnancies per year are among teenagers.” The rapid growth of teenagers getting pregnant is massive and the government has nothing left to do but to held seminars about teenage pregnancies wherein they tell different things regarding this issue about pregnancy. In this era, our country, the Philippines is getting closer to what so-called ‘liberated’ and the teenagers think it is fine to have sexual intercourse even though they are not married to their partner. Only a few still believe in the tradition where you can only give your virginity to the one who you are going to marry in the future. If this issue cannot be prevented, it can be suggested that at least gave the teenagers the knowledge they need regarding this issue so that they can decide for themselves if they’re going to be rational or not. Some programs provide information about family planning for teenagers. According to Dr. Omasanjuwa Edun, the Lagos State Team Leader of the initiative, “we have to start educating them on time to know about family planning so that when they find themselves in such situations they will be able to prevent unwanted pregnancies.” This can be one of the changes that can prevent early pregnancy within teenagers, to let them attend seminars that will explain to them the use of contraceptives.

Sometimes the reason for having pregnant at an early age is that teenagers are lack guidance from their parents. According to Sarah Pflugradt, RDN (2019), “Teen girls are more likely to get pregnant if they have limited or no guidance from their parents. When a teen does not feel that she can talk to her parents about sex, either because they forbid sex talk or because they are not around, she will more than likely turn to friends for direction on whether or not to have sex that can result in misinformation and possible teen pregnancy.” Not having guidance from the parents, teenagers would believe more to their friends and would think that everything she does is cool and okay, where in fact it only leads them to unwanted pregnancy. There is also a certain situation where a teenager really wants or dreams of having a little version of herself that led her to early pregnancy. According to LiveStrong.com., “A teenage mother has much more energy so teens can run and play with their children without getting winded or tired…”. It’s a matter of choice to have a baby at an early age, however, these people should still consider protecting themselves from judgments. It really sounds fun to have a little copy of you but it includes bigger responsibilities for you to handle and raise one.

Responsibilities are bigger, for it is not only the mother to be protected but also the child. According to HFR (healthresearchfunding.org), “A child causes a person to learn responsibility and maturity very quickly. These traits are necessary for the safekeeping of a newborn child”. Others believe that a child is a blessing to its mother and its family. When a teenage girl became pregnant, there are high tendencies that she would accept the fate of being a teenage mom and would adapt the thinking of being a responsible person and a responsible mother. Some believe that adoption could be a better choice instead of raising a child that is not sure if she can. According to Lawrence B. Finer and Rubina Hussain, “About 25 million of its citizens of the Philippines are women of reproductive age, and they experience high levels of unintended pregnancy, have relatively low levels of contraceptive use, and frequently experience unsafe abortion and consequently high levels of mortality and morbidity.” This only concludes that not all are ready to take responsibility for the mistake that they have done. Teenage girls that are not yet ready to face motherhood are more likely to think abortion into consideration. A matter of choice, but it requires a life to decide.

There are different reasons and situations why teenage pregnancy is happening and the consequences should be taken into consideration for the world might be exposed to too much disease that is sexually transmitted or to a sinful act of abortion. In a modern time, we can prevent such unwanted events like teenage pregnancy through the use of seminars and other social media platforms that will help the youth to be informed about the disadvantage and responsibilities that they might encounter if they would not think twice before doing a move, especially on having sexual intercourse at a very young age. Teenagers should be taught how to be responsible for their acts and let them give the community and themselves a bright future.
