An ‘engaged employee is defined as one who is fully absorbed by and enthusiastic about their work and so takes positive action to further the organization’s reputation and interests. Such employees will depict the qualities of commitment, loyalty, and morale. They will have a positive attitude towards their work and the organization.

The concept of employee engagement first emerged in the 1990s and became a widespread concept in the 2000s. The practice of employee engagement is now established in human resource management and internal communications. Engaged employees are seen to show a more positive attitude than disengaged employees. While the former group seems to have more trust, organizational commitment, and intrinsic enjoyment of work, the latter includes dissatisfied and less productive employees. A disengaged employee can range from someone doing the bare minimum at work to someone who actively damages the company’s work output and reputation. Therefore, organizations with high employee engagement are expected to outperform those with low employee engagement.

Employee engagement is often considered a synonym to employee satisfaction. But in reality, the two terms are quite different. Employee satisfaction is the extent to which one is content with their job. On the other hand, employee engagement is a broader topic that encompasses the concept of employee satisfaction. Employee engagement is the extent to which an employee is committed to their work and organization. It is the passion and enthusiasm employees feel towards their job. It is related to the amount of motivation, involvement, and emotional attachment an employee experiences. Satisfaction need not necessarily mean engagement. The manufacturing unit is registered with US FDA – 510K. The surgical and examination gloves meet ASTM D 3577 and D 3578, EN 455 standards. Safeshield manufactures latex surgical gloves, latex examination gloves, and latex gynecological gloves. They are available in various models, specifications, and variants. The gloves are manufactured using proprietary latex formulation. Hundred percent natural latex materials are used. Safeshield has excellent facilities for powder-free processing using modern computer-controlled chlorinators. The protein content in the low protein powder-free surgical and examination gloves is less than 30 microgram/gram. Ergonomically designed and hygienically manufactured, the gloves are of superior quality and are widely used and endorsed by medical practitioners and surgeons.

Manufacturing Facility

The company holds pride in its state-of-the-art factory located at Cochin Special Economic Zone, Kerala. The ultra-modern manufacturing plant stands in an area of 20,000 sq. ft and has incorporated world-class production methodologies to achieve highly efficient production. The factory has two line units that have a combined production capacity of 350,000 units per day. The factory uses packing machines, a latex formulation plant,s, and automated computerized chlorinators. It also has an in-house design facility with the latest CAD/CAM software that enables production that matches the specifications and guidelines of various international standards.

Manufacturing Process

The basic raw material used in the manufacture of gloves is latex. Chemicals such as sulfur, titanium dioxide, zinc dioxide, and other substances such as accelerators, pigments, stabilizers, de webbing agents, antioxidants are mixed with latex in a tank with an agitator. The solution is filtered and taken to the latex dipping tank. Porcelain molds are washed and cleaned and suspended on a continuous moving chain. They are first dipped in a coagulant solution of calcium nitrate and calcium carbonate. The coagulants will cause a relatively thick solid deposit on the surface of the molds. After the nitrate and carbonate have partially dried out, the molds are next dipped into the latex compound. At this stage, the nitrate will immediately coagulate a layer of latex over the mold. Because a thin layer of carbonate separates the film from the mold, it will help to remove the gloves from the molds. It will also prevent the gloves from sticking together. The freshly molded gloves in gel form are next leached in hot water to remove residual water-soluble protein and chemicals. The leaching process has become mandatory as a result of concerns regarding allergic reactions associated with latex proteins. This step is essential to reduce residual latex protein content in the gloves. Beading brushes are run over the cuff ends to create the beads. The next stage involves drying and curing the wet gloves inside a vulcanizing oven. This converts the gloves into an elastic state by causing the chemicals added during compounding to react with the rubber molecules in the latex. On exiting the oven, the gloves are once again dipped into hot water to remove any residues. The leached gloves are then dipped into a slurry of corn starch and dried. The gloves are then stripped off the molds. The molds are given a thorough chemical wash and rinsing before entering the next dipping cycle. Stripped gloves are hot-air tumbled to even them out as well as remove the detachable powder. They are batched in bins, tagged, and sampled for inspection. Operators examine the gloves for visual defects, measure their weights and dimensions, and check them for air leaks. Batches that pass the inspections are routed for direct packing where they are tested again for physical properties. They are also water tested for compliance to the maximum allowable leak failures called AQL. Only gloves that meet the specifications will be packed. Those that fail are bagged for rework and retest. The packed gloves are then passed onto the distribution department.


All the finished products are securely and hygienically packed in various suitable materials. They are appropriately labeled and sealed to avoid any kind of tampering under the brand name of Armour, Safeglove, or as specified by the customers. The clients can also avail the facility of customized packaging as per their orders and individual requirements. Different products are packed differently as per their special needs.

Routine Work

During the first week, I learned about the company through observation and interviews with the employees. I studied the company’s history, the different types of gloves they manufactured, the certifications the company has earned, and so on. I came to know of the benefits they were enjoying as part of being a factory set up in the Cochin Special Economic Zone, Kakkanad, Kerala.

The first task I was given was to help the company update and improve its website. I was asked to go through the company website and suggest changes to be made to it. I went through different glove manufacturing company websites and identified their features of attraction. I accordingly suggested changes that could be incorporated into Safeshield’s website to make it more impressive.

For the next four weeks, I was assigned the post of assistant supervisor in the packaging department. I was guided by my mentor, Mrs. Geetha Raju. She educated me on the importance of a supervisor’s role in a factory. The duty given to me was to ensure that all the workers maintained discipline and carried out their work efficiently. I was to make sure that none of the workers were sitting idle or wasting time. I was to report to the supervisor any bad behavior on the part of the workers. I also had to coordinate between the packaging and distribution departments by passing on relevant information and updates to both divisions. I was additionally given the task of updating data onto the system and taking copies of paperwork and filing them
