Outliers: Example Of Overcoming Adversity

Another ‘example of overcoming adversity’ is displayed for the reader to investigate. Once again, we are being called upon to scrutinize this account of an independent man who, against the chances, did well in a field in which he was not welcome, and out of it, made a name for himself. 

The Outliers informs reader’s on how successful people achieve success through the help of others, practice, and opportunity. In the field of law, much the same as some other field of study, the more educated somebody is, the more clients they get, just as, the more regard individuals express towards that person. While the speakers view of Joe Flom is positive, the speaker’s attitude towards him comes off as bitter, yet remaining neutral. Now acquainted with how significant timing and historical context are to any successful person. Flom was naturally introduced to a small generation, in a year that would put him at his expert pinnacle directly around the time there would be a corporate takeover in New York. This is self-assertive good luck—however, it is clear to see that it aided in ensuring Flom’s success. 

The speaker, Fernando Henrique, uses a narrative point of view in the Outliers. In pages 126-127 of the outliers by Malcolm Gladwell, the stories and context were both apart of a flashback from the past, which presents that the story is dated. “I remember once we had an issue involving a proxy fight” (Outliers 127). The phrase ‘I remember’ entails a flashback to the past, or a vivid memory Henrique had that describes his experiences. “There were lawyers who knew more about the rules of proxy contests, but no one was better in a fight than Joe Flom” (Outliers 126). The speaker boasts about Joe Flom and his expertise in the law field of study, while still adding a negative connotation to his physical appearance by saying “Flom was fat (a hundred pounds overweight then, one lawyer said..), physically unattractive (to a partner he resembled a frog)” (Outliers 126). The speaker, at this point in the text, boasted about Joe’s skills, then tears down his physical appearance. Joe Flom was described as a smart, knowledgeable lawyer, but an ill-mannered man concerning social niceties. Another ‘example of overcoming adversity’ is displayed for the reader to investigate.
