The career I decided to pursue research upon was project management. A project manager in the concrete business makes sure all the job sites are working at a good pace to make deadlines and to ensure they do the work correctly. This field struct interest in me as I currently work for a concrete company, and i’ve been taught how to do everything the right way and the best way. I do not want to do back-breaking work in the construction field for the rest of my life, so I decided to pursue a degree in Concrete Project Management.

This career really interested me when my sister and brother-in-law told me all about it. They told me they overlook projects, bid, contact contractors, and loads of other things for really good pay. Although pay is obviously not everything it’s still really nice to make a lot.

The career im want to follow needs very little educational requirements to enter it. Most construction companies want their project manager to have a project management degree with experience in the field. Luckily after im through with college and enough hard work I put into it I will earn my degree. The experience will be done as I have already worked in the field for nearly a year and will continue until I clearly understand the job.

According to the Middle Tennessee State University website, two of the classes needed to be taken are CIM 4050 – Management of Concrete Products: Ordering and Delivering and CIM 4150 – Concrete Problems: Diagnosis, Prevention, and Dispute Resolution. (MTSU.edu) Ordering and delivering of products I know to be true a very important role. Without material being at the site for the labourers, it will delay the process of which things get done, and they will begin to run out of work. Diagnosis, Prevention, and dispute resolution would also come highly in handy. If problems occur you would know exactly how to handle it, because the class would teach you how to handle it.

Employment for this job is always high in demand. Although, a book on project management says the job is growing at such a fast rate, it states in 2027 there will need to be 88 million people in this specific job role. (PMI 2017) This is due to the many companies on the rise and being started. Employment opportunities after this job usually consist of finding another company to work for or starting your own. Many also take over the business they work for due to the trust they implanted on the previous owner.

There are always issues within being a project manager though. You could bid low on jobs or to high on jobs. It’s important to try to bid a good number for a job to ensure you get it. Bidding to high could cause you to not get the job, and bidding to low could cause the company you work for to not earn enough money and go bankrupt. These mistakes can run a company into the ground and likelihood of this means they will most likely fire you. If you get fired due to this reason it can and will impact you tremendously. One, you would be out of a job and two, another company would probably not hire you because they would not want the same results.

In conclusion, concrete management is the exact field I want to get into. It is way more risky, but you do not have to break your back and make way better pay. I think if I want to continue this route, which I do, I need to continue working in its environment and work hard in my classes to earn the degree. By the end of it all, I hope to work for my current company as a project manager and eventually start my own business.
