Social inequality is an overwhelming factor in the continued marginalization and degradation of coloured people as a minority. During the midterm elections held in America, accusations of voter suppression were widespread in African American communities. Voters stated many machines were inoperable and untrained poll workers wrongly challenged Americans right to vote, unacceptable conditions common in Georgia where the lasting impacts of racism are stronger.

This manipulation and restriction on voting was outrageously undemocratic and promoted social inequality by proving the votes and voices of African Americans were neither valued nor respected. The input of the black community is discredited because of the continued legacy of systematic oppression. Although the laws that encouraged social inequality have been eradicated, public services have discreetly continued and translated the systematic oppression from the past to fit into our current society, permitting the voice of African Americans to be dismissed. The healthcare system has a notorious reputation for ignoring the concerns and pain of black patients. African American women are three times more likely to pass away from childbirth complications than white women, and according to the CDC it is the greatest disparity in healthcare amongst women. Furthermore, the National Center for Biotechnology Information revealed the medical disparity between African Americans and Caucasians stems from racial prejudice, which results in hundreds of avoidable deaths. The healthcare, prison and criminal justice systems are designed to oppress the African American community and manifest the widespread racism practiced before the Civil Rights War. The system is not broken, it is functioning precisely as it was designed.

These pernicious institutions are the primary cause of social inequality in America. The constant persecution of African Americans is the reason their voices are easily ignored; they are not accepted into society which justifies restricting their rights and endangering their lives. The most effective method to fight prejudice and recognize African Americans as humans is through education. The Southern Poverty Law Center examined the methods used to teach slavery across America and concluded that its history and continued impacts is poorly taught. All major textbooks failed to highlight varying experiences of slavery and how the systematic oppression continues to harm the African American community.

History classrooms also lack the ability to recognize the role of white supremacy and chose to sanitize slavery to protect the common inference that slavery was “not that bad”. The realities and horrors are concealed and students do not comprehend how past society was built to exploit the horrendous yet legal practice. By exposing the truth of the most heinous crime in history, students will be able to demand accountability of current institutions that racially discriminate, and utilize their privilege to support the rehabilitation of African American communities. This will encourage a reevaluation of the African American image from one filled with “thugs” and riddled with poverty to the truth that they actually improve and promote society and democracy. Consequently, forming an environment where African American voices are valued in an inclusive society and social inequality is dismantled.
