Everyone has a dream of some sort sometimes you think about it so much and don’t face reality and see that the dream will never come true. Daydreaming is something everyone does. It can be about things you really want, things that are stressing you out, or a certain conflict that is going on in your life. Daydreaming helps you escape from life for a second but too much of it might make you lose sight of the things that are really going on. In the story “Of Mice and Men” by John Steinbeck and “The Myth of Daedalus and Icarus” by Ovid both of stories indicate that the characters are trying to escape reality. In “Of Mice and Men” the characters have a goal to get their farm it’s basically a distraction from the real world. In the story “The Myth of Daedalus and Icarus” it seems as if they are also trying to escape from reality in the story they make an invention like bird wings these stories both have symbols to why they are escaping reality.

Crooks is excessively glad to bring up George and Lennie aren’t the initial ones to have a dream. “I have seen hundreds of men come by on the road an’ on the ranches, with their bindles on their back an’ that same damn thing in their heads. Hundreds of them. They come an’ they quit an’ every damn one of ‘em’s got a little piece of land in his head. An’ never a god damn one of ‘em ever gets it”. Crooks is excessively glad to bring up that George and Lennie aren’t the initial ones to have a dream: each vagrant farm hand simply needs a little plot of land. Are George ad Lennie going to make it great or are they simply going to “quit a go an,” like every other person? The author made the farm represent the possibility of freedom. The farm is protection from the bad and cruel things of the world. Once people get something they have been working hard for they quiet and don’t work for anything else. The quote relates to the theme because George and Lennie ‘’aren’t like everybody else’’. They’re using the dream aka the farm to get away from reality. Crook is trying to explain to them that everybody has this dream of the farm. Once they get the dream of the farm everybody quits which makes them realize that the farm wasn’t a realistic dream that they could have. Lennie and George share a dream of having a little farm. It would be a place they could call home. This dream helps them not feel as lonely or isolated in the world. They even say that “someday they’re gonna get back together and they’re…gonna have a little house and a couple of acres an’ a cow and some pigs” and “An’ have rabbits. Go on, George! Tell me about what we’re gonna have in the garden and about the rabbits in the cages and about the rain in the winter and the stove, and how thick the cream is on the milk like you can hardly cut it. Tell me, George.” The author is trying to say that this farm becomes a place of belonging, and the dream is thought to be a possibility. Dreams can be dangerous once one starts thinking like George and Lennie. The possibilities are not endless and disappointment and dissatisfaction occur.

In the story “The Myth of Daedalus and Icarus” By Ovid uses the invention of the “wings” to escape for the son and father. The father is trying to figure out ways to escape and he thinks he found a way to. In the story, it says “so saying he applied his thought to the new invention and altered the natural order of things. He laid down lines of feathers, beginning with the smallest, following the shorter with longer ones, so that you might think they had grown on the slant” The father is inventing something that is natural for humans and I could be very dangerous

They are trying to escape a place by making a dangerous invention not knowing it will work but in reality they can because the place they are in isn’t meant to be escaped from. The father feels very guilty and blames himself for what happened “ Then he caught sights of the feathers on the waves, and cursed his inventions. He laid the body to rest, in a tomb” The author is trying to say that he feels like its his fault his son died It ties back to the theme because the father made the wings for the son to escape reality but then after he made the wings things took a turn for the worst death rows upon the son and the father blamed himself for it this shows that you can have a dream to do something but in reality if you don’t think about it all the way it could lead to death. Everyone has a dream of their own big or small and if you want it hard enough you will reach the goal. What people have to understand thought you cant just base everything off of that very thing you have to think of all the possibilities that can happen. Like at the end of each story someone dies because they didn’t think of the things that could happen. Its okay to have dreams but you also need to focus on the real world and what really matters in the moment.
